Who said “Mars is no fun?”
In 2011 French pop chanteuse Camille Dalmais sang “Mars in no fun.” In 2012 the NASA rover Curiosity proved different.
With the rover safely on Mars and the first pictures received - as expected the social media networks then responded with a stream of spoofs of the pictures and videos that made the landing famous.
The first grainy black and white images gave rise to one of my favorite visual puns on the Curiosity name.

With sincere apologies to my cat loving friends.
My next favorite were the cheeky references to popular and cult figures. First homage to Star Wars with this great re-imaging:

The inevitable politically inspired, “Yankees go home”, paying homage to flying saucer

More fun is this addition of Marvin, the ultimate Martian, from the hilarious 1950’s “Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a half Century” cartoons.

It’s good to see the ‘Commander, Flying Saucer X-2’ making yet another appearance. This is Marvin’s second ‘real’ martian appearance. In 2003 he was the mascot image for the highly successful NASA rover Spirit.
The prize though goes to the highly imaginative musical spoof of the NASA landing video by Dave Hudson.
Surely showing that Mars can be fun, even before the science begins!
